Permanent Residence and Citizenship

After 5 years of holding the first residence permit, you can apply for permanent residence. To do this, you must:

  1. Pay taxes
  2. Abide by the law
  3. Be absent from Italy for no more than 10 months in total over 5 years
  4. Know Italian at A2 level

After 10 years of holding the first residence permit, you can apply for citizenship. There is no need to renounce your original citizenship.
