Timeframe

From the beginning of document collection to receiving the D visa and the ability to enter Italy takes about 6 months.

  1. Make a power of attorney and send it to Italy, as well as collect documents (2 months)
  2. Obtain necessary documents in Italy (4 months)
  3. Receive the D visa from the consulate (from 1 to 4 months)
  4. Arrive in Italy
  5. Submit documents for residence permit in Italy
  6. Wait for fingerprinting procedures (approximately 3 months)

In order to extend your residence permit in the future, you need to pay taxes.

Minimum income for a family with a child: 18,146 euros (gross) per year (data from 2023). Taxes have many different coefficients, but if you earn the minimum, you will pay around 4000 euros per year (±20%). The higher the income, the higher the tax rate.

What is the duration of the residence permit?

Residence Permit and Citizenship

After 5 years of the first residence permit, you can obtain permanent residency. To do this, you must:

  1. Pay taxes
  2. Comply with the law
  3. Stay outside Italy for no more than 10 months in total over 5 years
  4. Know Italian at A2 level

After 10 years of the first residence permit, you can apply for citizenship. You do not need to renounce your original citizenship.
