What are the timelines

From the start of document collection to receiving the D visa and the ability to enter Italy takes about 4 months.

  1. Make a power of attorney and send it to Italy, as well as collect documents (1 month)
  2. Receive the necessary documents in Italy (1 month)
  3. Get the D visa from the consulate (from 1 to 4 months)
  4. Arrive in Italy
  5. Submit documents for a residence permit in Italy
  6. Wait for the fingerprint procedure (on average 3 months)
  7. Receive the residence permit (up to 2 months after fingerprints)

In order to renew your residence permit in the future, you need to pay taxes.

The minimum income for a family with a child is 18,146 euros (gross) per year (data from 2023). Taxes have many different coefficients, but if you earn the minimum, you will pay about 4000 euros per year (±20%). The higher the income, the higher the tax rate.

Permanent Residence and Citizenship

After 5 years from the first residence permit, you can obtain permanent residence (PR). For this, you need to:

  1. Pay taxes
  2. Comply with the law
  3. Be absent from Italy for no more than 10 months in total during the 5 years
  4. Know the Italian language at an A2 level

After 10 years from the first residence permit, you can apply for citizenship. There is no need to renounce your original citizenship.
